i found a 96 2.8 audi with a clean body and am considering swapping my 1.8t into it. I've read it's direct bolt on to the tranny but are the ecus interchangeable?

You will need a harness and ECU. They are definitely not interchangeable.

It's really a question of if the harness will plug in. Since there were a lot of changes to the B5 chassis from 96 to 01 I would guess the harness will not plug right in. Also you will need to swap pedal cluster in as well because 01 was DBW. If you found a complete AEB that would have a much better chance of plugging in.

Yea it's more Work then is needed the 96 was a the 12v also I'm pretty sure there were many differences in the harness and like large said u would have to change the pedals and the dbc set up
