I'm thinking about trading the wrx in on one of these.

    I'm finding 00-02's around the $15k mark...around 80k mile mark

I've always liked these for some odd reason..and mmm v8 350hp amg motor sounds good too.

    How shitty/good are these?

I have spoken to a few people who have owned these, total junk they say. Shitty cheap looking interior, good amount of annoying mechanical issues too.

Do you want it to tow a trailer or something? It can't be as good on fuel as your Subaru.

I have a friend who had an 01... not amg though. It spent more time broken then it did running. Lots and lots of mechanical issues.

Tyler what use would you have for one of these? None that I can think It would be like the other trucks you had, have fun with them for a month or two get sick of it and then sell it. And the MPG's can't be too hot either......15-20 I would imagine.

If the maint. schedule has been followed, and you continue to do so, it will be good to you, but most people skip the thousand(s) dollar maint when the car gets a little older, and that's when shit starts going wrong.

sorry for posting it in the wrong area too. :(

I'm looking to get rid of the subie, and pick up a nice SUV, i really like these..or maybe a 2004 Rangerover HSE they've been coming down in price a lot.
then maybe pick up a fun summer car (s2k) cough.

what type of problems were had with these?

Yep, they're pretty pricey to keep up, however from strictly a mechanical standpoint, they're not horrible.

Problems off the top of my head:
    plug wires (about $400)
    HVAC electrical problems
Air mass meters (if you've had German cars, very typical - about $350)
Wheel bearings (pretty tough to do - about $400 per corner installed)

Brakes aren't crazy, compared with other AMG cars.

And finally, FWIW, I wouldn't own one of these or ANY Rover product (despite the BMW mechanicals)

having sold those and i would recommend to stay away.

    you're better off looking for a X5 4.8is

The new CLS 63 AMG is the best looking sedan IMHO. And for a coupe,
    the '09 SL63 AMG! It doesn't get much better.
